Vignettes from Madhipura

The capable team at Madhipura Christian Hospital is accomplishing so much to support the Mahadalit untouchables from nearby villages. Here are a few vignettes.

Anti-Human Trafficking: One form of trafficking is forcing child brides to marry at 12 or 13. One way MCH fights this is by offering community college training for health assistants. So these girls gain a marketable skill, get a job at MCH or another EHA hospital, and are able to make their own decisions about marriage.

Disaster Risk Reduction: 560 people in 28 village have received training in how to help practically and medically during natural disasters, and in preventing tragedies like fires.

Non-Formal Schools: For Mahadalit kids, government education is limited, so the MCH staff run 16 different village schools with a total of 450 students. These children are learning to speak English and do math, and they are progressing in skills and knowledge.

Malnutrition: In October 2023, 55 village children were screened for malnutrition; 7 were found to be severely malnourished and 13 were moderate. Mothers were taught how to prepare nutritious food, and they committed to feeding their children better. In December 2025 the same village kids were screened, and just 2 were found to be moderately malnourished. The progress is encouraging to everyone.

NICU: It’s not unusual for babies in this area to be born weighing just 1.5 to 2 pounds; many are born at home. Without care in the hospital, they will not survive. Even without a pediatrician, MCH staff care for these infants for 2-3 months, often without cost, so that they are strong enough to go home, weighing in at 5 or 6 pounds.
