They Come in Dead and Go Back Home Alive!
Recently Madhipura Christian Hospital’s Dr. Arpit and Dr. Ashish went to a deep interior village with other EHA staff to conduct a health camp. While there, they came across a 25-year-old woman named Pari lying on the ground, nearly catatonic. She could not talk, see, or interact with others. Immediately they tried to convince the family to allow them to bring her back to the hospital for treatment, but it was explained to them that her husband had left her and she had 11 children. Her mother-in-law alone was caring for her and the children, so she was not free to accompany Pari to the hospital.
Once back at Madhipura, Dr. Arpit could not stop thinking about this woman. Several times the team returned to the village to try to convince Pari to come back with them, but it wasn’t until she developed seizures and became comatose that she was admitted. After a CT scan it was determined that she had a large brain tumor and needed emergency surgery to remove it.
While brain surgery is not a procedure typically handled by the Madhipura surgery team, there was no choice. Pari would die without help. So the team went ahead and removed the tumor, and Pari steadily improved. Her miraculous recovery was a beautiful thing to see. Before she came into the hospital, she could not walk or see, but after surgery and physical therapy, she went home walking on her own. The people of the village now have a very high opinion of what they call the mission hospital, stating that “people come in dead and go back home alive!”
