When a Bicycle Is Essential
Omprakash is a street vendor who sells items from a case on his bicycle. His family includes three children and a wife who has disabilities. She used to work in a flour mill, but lost her job in the first COVID-19 lockdown. Omprakash was left as the sole breadwinner, but the lockdowns also made it very difficult for him to sell his wares. He began to struggle to earn enough to pay rent on their home and to purchase adequate food.
The only option Omprakash could think of for raising money was to sell his bicycle, but he knew that would severely limit his ability to earn an income once the lockdowns were over. The family’s future looked bleak.
Thankfully, EHA’s disaster team held an emergency response food distribution event nearby, and Omprakash and his family received enough dry goods to feed them for at least a month. This assistance came at just the right time so that he did not have to sell his bicycle. EHA’s relief efforts have given Omprakash new hope to continue to work for his family’s livelihood even during this difficult time.
